Remembering the preservation of foods

Hello,
Just reminiscing about when times were more interesting and with just my own thoughts I did many things in an attempt to be as self sustainable as possible. Canning everything I could find.
My mothers interpretation of this thought was one day when she called me to see how I was I said I was canning salsa. She said what is there I do not can? I said air. Her reply was that I would can the cows baller if I could figure out how to get it into the jar.
We both laughed hysterically because we both knew that was the truth. I canned all my stuff outside on a 3 burner cook stove that worked on propane. This way I did not heat up my house and was able to can many things without heating up the house or using allot of electricity.
When we bought our Verndale home we canned in our garage. Then I even canned potatoes that sure tasted good in the winter. Fried for breakfast and enjoyed.
Oh well time goes on. And best of all life continues and we just have to learn to grow where we are planted.

  1. Here I am planted in a gated community with an upside-down mortgage in South Florida, but hey I am growing limes, figs, mangoes, basil and Japanese Thyme, and you know what . . . I go to the Green Market every Saturday and now I am growing my own sunflower sprouts. I am even thinking now about buying in bulk what is seasonal at the Green Market and preserving again. I used to can stuff outdoors when I lived in the wild woods of Arkansas.

    It is time.

  2. Hello Professor,
Yes like I have said many times I would can the cows baller if I could. Some of the spaghetti sauce recipes and salsa things are so much better when you make them yourself. If I only could do it I would be happy but canned potatoes are the best when you do them yourself.
At one time when I sold Avon I had a friend/customer who canned her own soups and stews in the fall for winter for both herself and her boyfiend. I was amazed with her because she was physically crippled and still did all of that. Her boyfriend had a large garden and grew all his own stuff. She prepared the jars in quarts so he used them for work. How wonderful a person she is to care that much.
Time for me to get with my final project. Later.

  3. Hello all,
Today I was thinking about some of the activities we used to do when I had my garden space. This is about the time of the year I would be canning everything I could think of. Driving around town and picking up bags of freshly mowed grass.
Did you know if you take a bag of grass and put it into a garbage can and leave it formant for a few days you have a nutrient rich and smelly sort of compost tea? Yes it helps plants like tomatoes and peppers that have a heavy feeding schedule. All you have to do is take a bucket and pour the tea around the base of the tomatoes and peppers and they will spring back into action. The grass can then be put around the base of the tomatoes to keep feeding them after the fermentation process has happened. They love it!
I must be busy on my project. Wish me luck!

  4. We need to write a book at my house because if it can be done and done wrong we have probably accomplished that.
I have the misfortune of believing everyone I either talk with or write to and this causes allot of negative issues. When you talk to your mortgage broker. They are called brokers because that is the how and what they make you!! When we had issues with our house and I had a broken neck and no money coming in because my job decided I did not get hurt on the job we got behind since I could not work for about 7 months. I was absolutely devastated by the fact that we were going to loose our little acre that we had been working so diligently to maintain.
Our 24 apple trees and not to mention the crab apple I planted in honor of my father were all growing well and producing fruits. Yes my father was a crab but not only that he adored the taste of the crab apples and ate them all the time I was growing up on our farm where we had 3 of them that stood like majestic beacons.
Anyway to continue the property was lost to foreclosure and we now live in a creamery building where we cannot do much but glare at each other.
Enough of that. Have a great week everyone. Don't forget to add to this continuing saga.

  5. How much better things seem when the weather is cooler and the storms have passed. There is absolutely no moisture in the air today and the highs are expected to be in the 70's instead of the 90+ category. This is my kind of weather.
I am here being temporarily abandoned as my hubby has some fun stuff to do with his brother and deliver a wheelchair to my mother who is in a care center. Hopefully everything goes according to the plan they have.
Here I am stuck at home attempting to get my schoolwork completed along wit the kitchen cleaned. How fun is that? Oh well I was raised with such a strong set of values and commitment that I could not function any other way and always work before play. There are days I would like to play hooky however and today is one of them.
May be later when this semester is complete.
